Every day in the U.S., some 2,500 youths ages 12 to 17 abuse prescription painkillers for the first time. In fact, since 2007, more Ohioans have died from unintentional drug overdoses than from motor vehicle accidents or suicide. In this session, we'll discuss the most common drugs of abuse, how they are being distributed, their street value and the most effective ways to identify abuse and drug diversion.

About one in nine senior citizens experiences some kind of abuse - neglect, financial exploitation or physical, sexual or emotional abuse. With the number of U.S. senior citizens expected to climb from about 40 million currently to more than 72 million by 2030, it is vital for law enforcement to know the signs, scope and effects of elder abuse. Participants will come away with a better understanding of elder abuse, including how to identify and effectively respond to it.

Learn about the Fugitive Safe Surrender program, which facilitates the safe and peaceful surrender of individuals wanted for felony or misdemeanor offenses in a way that reduces the risk to peace officers, communities and the fugitives themselves. The U.S. Marshals Service introduced the program in 2004 in Cuyahoga County. Since then, more than 25,000 wanted individuals have peacefully surrendered at events across the country.

The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) has played a role in more than 6,000 Ohio investigations since 2002, generating leads by electronically comparing DNA profiles from crime scene samples to the known DNA profiles of convicted offenders. You'll get an inside look at how BCI ensures accurate DNA collections and how the CODIS lab processes DNA data and provides notification of a database match. The workshop also covers how BCI's Criminal Intelligence Unit can aid in locating a newly identified person of interest.
